Impact of Community Engagement

Community Engagement Has a Huge Impact!

Collaborations between students, faculty, and community organizations help address common challenges, share resources, and tap into collective expertise. By nurturing these partnerships, universities and communities can create a vibrant space for exchanging knowledge, ideas, and skills. Engaging in meaningful collaborations, conducting impactful research, expanding educational outreach, and supporting local entrepreneurship allows universities to make a lasting, positive impact that extends well beyond the campus and benefits the entire community.

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is highly beneficial for organizations as it helps them better understand the needs and perspectives of the communities they serve, leading to more effective programs and greater social impact. CBPR takes place in community settings and involves community members in the design and implementation of research projects, demonstrating respect for the contributions to success that are made by community partners. Some of the key advantages include:

Accurate understanding of community needs: Direct community engagement reveals overlooked issues, ensuring programs address the most pressing concerns.

Increased community engagement and ownership: Involvement in research boosts community support and participation in related programs.

Tailored program development: Research insights allow organizations to design effective programs, answer important questions for operations, or succeed in grant writing.

Improved program effectiveness: Community feedback during research and development increases the likelihood of successful interventions.

Enhanced credibility: Engaging with the community builds trust and legitimacy with stakeholders.

Capacity building: Community members gain research skills, empowering them to advocate for their needs.

CBPR may be directly with a faculty member, or may involve working with students through a service-learning course.

SSU staff and faculty members are members of the community and serve in a variety of ways, including as public speakers, on boards and committees, etc. Tenure track and tenured faculty at SSU are required to do community service. Faculty/staff community service offers valuable benefits to community partners, including access to expert knowledge, research insights, a motivated student workforce, and potential funding. Key advantages include:

Expert knowledge and research: Faculty provide data-driven solutions and informed insights to address community challenges.

Student workforce: Community partners gain support from students who bring fresh perspectives and contribute to projects.

Capacity building: Faculty help organizations improve services, develop new programs, and build capacity through guidance and training.

Networking: Collaboration with faculty and staff opens doors to new partnerships, funding opportunities, and resources.

Community impact: Faculty-led efforts can address complex issues and lead to greater social impact through research-driven interventions.

Increased visibility: Partnering with universities raises the profile of community organizations and attracts new supporters.
